Michaela Strachan has opened up on the tragic death of her best friend, who died 10 years after her own shock diagnosis. The 57 year old animal lover, lives happily in South Africa with her partner Nick Chevallier - a wildlife director and cameraman - and their 18 year old son, Nick. But in 2014, Michaela’s world was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy, at 48 years old.

Michaela Strachan was going through one of the toughest times of her life when she started out on Pilgrimage: The Road Through North Wales.The nature expert and Springwatch host had lost a number of loved ones over the preceding year, including her best friend Lucy who passed away from breast cancer just before filming began. It was an incredibly difficult year for Michaela, 57, but the broadcaster has experienced more than her fair share of tragedy over the years, from health battles to divorce. She joins Spencer Matthews, Tom Rosenthal, Eshaan Akbar, Christine McGuinness, Amanda Lovett and Sonali Shah on the 220km trek for the BBC Two show.
