COVID-19: Patient transfers continue to ‘worsen’ according to network that includes Hamilton hospitals

COVID-19 hospitalizations.In a joint statement this past weekend, groups representing Hamilton-Niagara-Haldimand-Brant-Burlington (HNHBB) region hospitals said pressures continue to “threaten hospitals’ capacity” for time-sensitive surgeries and procedures.The assertion comes as the networks revealed 21 patients needing 24-hour medical care were transferred to other facilities over the last three weeks. That’s up from the 10 reported two weeks ago.“To ensure available critical care capacity in the region for patients who require it, HNHBB hospitals have undertaken a common approach to identify and, if necessary, direct transfers of critical care patients to other hospitals outside of the region,” the group said in the statement on Friday.

COVID-19 vaccination deadlines for staffers and both are reporting compliance rates over 95 per cent.As of Thursday, a majority of staff and physicians at both of the city’s entities are fully vaccinated with many more updating their status as each week passes, according to spokespeople at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS).HHS’ Wendy Stewart told Global News that over 96 per cent of workers are vaccinated with just over 10 days left before a hard deadline for its mandatory vaccination policy kicks in on November 30.

Hamilton Health Sciences closing field hospital amid dropping COVID-19 hospitalizations

Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) says it’s shutting down it’s Mobile Health Unit (MHU) effective immediately as per directions from the Ministry of Health.The field hospital, set up at a parking lot on Wellington Street just outside of Hamilton General at the end of May, was part of an initiative from public health Ontario to handle potential overflow from local and out of region hospitals amid the COVID-19 pandemic.“The decommissioning process is expected to be complete by early September,” spokesperson Wendy Stewart told Global News in e-mail on Monday.

Coronavirus: Hamilton Health Sciences eyes site for potential 3rd-wave response structure

COVID-19.Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) says it is “assessing” the Wellington Street parking lot by the Hamilton General Hospital as a potential site to create some additional temporary inpatient capacity.“At present, we are only at the planning stage and assessing the lot for its potential use,” said Wendy Stewart, public relations specialist at HHS. “The Wellington Street parking lot was chosen because of its proximity to other HHS facilities, including the Hamilton General Hospital.”It’s being planned as a provincial resource and, if it goes ahead, would have the capacity for up to 80 hospital-level beds.
