Breakthrough announced in year-old case of girl's remains found in field

SMYRNA, Del. - Police in Delaware say "persons of interest" are in custody out of state in the case of a young girl's remains found dumped on a softball field a little more than a year ago.The Smyrna Police Department announced Tuesday that investigators had reached a breakthrough in the case.They're being assisted by the FBI, and they're awaiting the possible transfer of those persons of interest into their custody, at which time they would announce any crimes with which they are being charged."This investigation remains very active, with search warrants being executed, evidence being processed, and interviews being conducted," police said.

DOVER, Del. - Jury trials in Delaware are set to resume next week under a phased reopening plan.Delaware Supreme Court Chief Justice Collins Seitz Jr. on Friday moved the courts to a modified Phase 3 reopening, which will allow the resumption of jury trials.The plan, effective Monday, will increase the number of people allowed into court facilities to 75% capacity, the Delaware State News reported.

Standoff at New Castle County liquor store ends without injuries

NEWARK, Del. - A standoff at a Delaware liquor store that involved an exchange of gunfire with a state trooper has ended without anyone being injured, according to police.Delaware State Police said in a news release Saturday that a trooper responded Friday night to a report of a robbery in progress at the Newark Bottle Shop Liquor Store.When the trooper confronted the suspect, the suspect displayed a firearm, and “an exchange of gunfire took place,” according to the news release.The trooper left the building and additional officers arrived. The suspect barricaded himself inside, eventually exiting the building after a four-hour standoff, the news release said.
