Stephen Colbert has canceled “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” for the week after suffering a health scare. On Monday, Colbert, 59, posted on Instagram via his show’s official account, “Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week.
I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?’ Actually. I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix.”A ruptured appendix can be a life-threatening condition that requires immediate surgery.
Famously, that was the cause of death for master escape artist Harry Houdini at age 52. Colbert did not specify when he became aware of his condition, or when he went to the hospital.
The comedian has been hosting “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on CBS since 2015, succeeding “The Late Show with David Letterman.” His guests for this week were supposed to include Jennifer Garner and Baz Luhrmann on Tuesday, Patrick Stewart on Wednesday, and Barbra Streisand and Kelsey Grammer on Thursday. “I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me,” he continued in his note, referring to his wife, Evelyn “Evie” McGee-Colbert, who he’s been married to since 1993.
