Narendra Damodardas Modi (born 17 September 1950) is an Indian politician serving as the 14th and current Prime Minister of India since 2014. He was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is the Member of Parliament for Varanasi. Modi is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation. He is the first prime minister outside of the Indian National Congress to win two consecutive terms with a full majority and the second to complete five years in office after Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
After recording 1,975 fresh novel coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, India's Covid-19 cases count surged to 26,917 today, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare data.
The death toll due to the highly contagious infection also increased to 826 as 47 new deaths were reported since yesterday, it added.
Active cases in India shot past 20,000 and now stands at 20,117. There are also 77 foreign nationals who are affected by the virus, the ministry said.
Apart from that, 5,913 patients who were infected with Covid-19, have been discharged or cured of the virus while one has migrated from the country.
