From Deal Or No Deal and Wheel Of Fortune to Blankety Blank, classic shows keep returning to our screens – and now BBC One is continuing the trend with its reboot of the hit series Gladiators. The show debuted in 1992 on ITV and ran for eight seasons before ending in 2000.
Gladiators was then revived for a short run by Sky between 2008-2009, with Ian Wright, Kirsty Gallacher and Caroline Flack as hosts.
Now it’s back with brand new contestants, gladiators and a fresh look – including a change of hosts as Bradley Walsh and his son Barney present the action in the iconic arena. “We had to talk Barney into doing the show,” confesses Bradley, 63. “We’ve done so much Breaking Dad and I’m sick to death of getting thrown off buildings by him – but we said we’d do this, as it’s a one-off.” Barney, 26, adds, “I think the beauty of us doing it as a pair is that it’s completely generational – and the kids that watched the original Gladiators are now grown up with children of their own.” The new hosts have another link to the original show thanks to Bradley’s wife and Barney’s mum, Donna, who was an associate producer on the original series when Barney was a baby. “I used to walk Barney around in his pram on the arena floor,” Bradley remembers. “It’s a whole family affair!” Not to mention that Bradley himself was a contestant in the celebrity special of Gladiators 26 years ago. “I think I stepped in at the last minute,” Bradley recalls. “It was in 1997, the year Barney was born.
