The daily number of new coronavirus cases is at its highest level since the start of the pandemic, worrying new data shows. Figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO) show that in the past 24 hours, 212,326 new infections have been detected - more than 20,000 higher than the previous record.
The United States, Brazil and India recorded the biggest increases, the data shows. The previous highest daily figure for new cases was 189,077, which was recorded on June 28.
There have been more than 11 million confirmed cases worldwide so far, with an estimated 525,000 deaths. According to the WHO, a further 5,134 deaths were recorded in the 24 hours to 10am today.
