The future of the live music industry looks incredibly bleak, with a trade body warning the sector could lose £900 million without the government’s help during the coronavirus. Stars like Stormzy, Mariah Carey, Sir Elton John, Madonna and BTS have been forced to scrap or postpone their scheduled tours this summer due to the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
And now the Live Music Group has warned of the staggering impact the closures will have on the industry in the long term. According to the trade body, 550 grassroots music venues, which is 82% of the total, are at immediate risk of closure due to the pandemic.
