The Department of Education has declined to rule out the prospect of an extended school closure over the coming mid-term break.
The department said in a statement this morning that "no decision has been taken". It was responding to a story this morning from the Irish Independent, which states that the Cabinet has discussed the idea of closing schools for an additional week and that a decision to do so is "expected".
A spokesperson for the department said that to date the evidence demonstrates that schools have reopened safely. They said there had been significant investment to support all infection prevention and control measures recommended by the public health authorities.
