NEWARK, Del. - Police say a 30-year-old Maryland man was killed when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle in Delaware. The man was riding his bike on Salem Church Road in Newark at about 10:15 p.m. Friday when the driver of a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu behind him attempted to pass him. Delaware State Police said that at the same time, the bicyclist veered to the left and was hit by the front passenger side of the car. The impact knocked the man off his bike and into the northbound lane. The bicyclist, of Elkton, Maryland, was taken to Christiana Hospital, where he later died.

NEWARK, Del. - The mayor of Newark, Delaware, says that a council member has died unexpectedly after being hospitalized. A news release from the city government said that Councilwoman Sharon Hughes died Saturday at Christiana Hospital. No cause of death was given. She was 68. The two-term council member was first elected in 2019 and re-elected last April. She told The Newark Post that she was proud of helping people who were struggling due to the pandemic, including by volunteering at mobile food pantries.

WILMINGTON, Del. - One person has died after a fire in a Wilmington duplex Monday morning.Wilmington fire officials said crews were called to the 100 block of West 24th Street just after 11:30 Monday morning for a house fire.Firefighters found flames coming from the first floor of a duplex when they arrived at the location.While fire crews battled the flames, a resident was found inside the structure, on the second floor. That person was initially treated at the scene by medics, then rushed to Christiana Hospital.
