LOWER MERION, Pa. - A volunteer Lower Merion firefighter is back doing what he loves after recovering from an accident on I-76 last summer.Sam Shaffer, 18, is back with the Lower Merion High School's men’s lacrosse team as he makes his debut back on the field this week after recovering from severe injuries caused by an accident that seriously injured one of his colleagues and killed another. Back on July 24, around 3 a.m., emergency crews responded to a crash involving two vehicles in the westbound lanes of I-76 in Lower Merion Township.At 3:23 a.m., authorities say Jacquelyn Walker, 63, was operating a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the right lane as she approached the scene of the crash. They say she then crossed over the rumble strips on the side of the highway and plowed into the crash scene, injuring Shaffer and his friend, Alex Fischer and killing firefighter, Tom Royds. RELATED:Shaffer was flown from the scene of the accident to Penn Presbyterian where he spent about a week with a brain bleed, fractured eye socket, broken leg, and a torn ACL and MCL. Now, Shaffer is back in both uniforms, and he says he owes it all to his family and his never-give-up attitude. "It feels great finally getting back out with the family, the team, firefighting again, it feels great," he said.

UPPER MERION, Pa. - Volunteer firefighter Alex Fischer returned home after being injured in a crash last month that was caused by a suspected drunk driver.Reuven Fischer wrapped his arms around his son and welcomed him home from the hospital nearly a month to the day after a serious crash. "It’s amazing that I’m here today. I mean it’s all because of Tommy he saved my life," Alex Fischer said.Fischer along with other volunteer firefighters from Lower Merion Township would forever have their lives altered on July 24 at 3:30 a.m.An accused drunk driver crashed into Fischer, Sam Shaffer, Tom Royds, and a state trooper as they were wrapping up an accident scene on the Schuylkill Expressway.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A funeral was held on Saturday for a Montgomery County firefighter who police say was killed by a drunk driver while he was aiding a two-car crash on the Schuylkill Expressway over the weekend.Tom Royds was laid to rest in Lower Merion Township where he had served as a firefighter. State police said emergency responders were called shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday to a collision involving two cars in the westbound lanes of I-76 in Lower Merion Township.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A procession has led the body of a fallen firefighter to the coroner's office.Tom Royds passed away as a result of a crash on Interstate 76. Royds worked at the Union Fire Association full time and even worked as a volunteer with the Clifton Heights and the Belmont Hills Fire Company.
