HAMBURG – Former West Germany and Hamburger SV forward Uwe Seeler is to have an operation to repair a broken hip after a bad fall at home. “The honorary captain of the German national team will have to be operated on later today,” Hamburg said on its website Friday. “The whole club wishes Uwe all the best as well as a speedy recovery.” The 83-year-old Seeler has repeatedly suffered health setbacks in recent years.
After a car accident in 2010, the former striker lost hearing in his right ear and had problems with balance. He also had a pacemaker fitted and had to have a tumor removed from his shoulder, news agency dpa reported.
