If you’ve read Normal People you know how important the sex scenes are to the plot. And understandably they play an integral role in the television series.

Both Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal knew what they were getting into when they signed on for the roles of Marianne and Connell.

But there was never a concern that it would be distasteful. From the get-go, the cast and crew wanted these moments to real, raw and honest.

Lenny Abrahamson, who directed the first six episodes, admitted that sex scenes are still such a taboo, especially in Irish television.
