Northern rail passengers will no longer have to show their tickets - and they won't be given penalty fines either. In response to the coronavirus crisis, and as well as slashing services in a reduced timetable, the operator has introduced a raft of new measures aimed at boosting commuter safety.
All gated ticket areas at stations are now fully open. This means passengers do not have to pass paper or season tickets through the barriers or present them to staff.
Northern has also suspended the issuing of penalty fares until further notice. The new guidance supersedes previous advice that allowed passengers to ask ticket-checking Northern staff to 'stand back' to enable social distancing.
