Guatemala vows to detain, return new migrant caravan
MORALES – Guatemala vowed to detain and return members of a new caravan of about 2,000 migrants that set out from neighboring Honduras in hopes of reaching the United States, saying they represent a health threat amid the coronavirus pandemic. While it was reminiscent of 2018 — when a caravan started out just before key U.S. elections — this year it was clear that times had changed, in part because of fears of contagion.Soon after the Honduran migrants entered Guatemala on foot Thursday, overwhelming border guards, Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei vowed to return them to Honduras, citing efforts to contain the pandemic.
