As rich nations prepare for coronavirus vaccine, others could be left behind: experts
coronavirus intensifies, rich countries are rushing to place advance orders for the inevitably limited supply to guarantee their citizens get immunized first — leaving significant questions about whether developing countries will get any vaccine before the pandemic ends.Earlier this month, the United Nations, International Red Cross and Red Crescent, and others said it was a “moral imperative” that everyone have access to a “people’s vaccine.” But such grand declarations are unenforceable, and without a detailed strategy, the allocation of vaccines could be extremely messy.

Scotland’s former mining communities still struggling years after pit closures
pit closures due to a lack of local job and educational opportunities, a report has found.Almost 20 years since the last deep mine north of the Border shut, coalfield towns and villages remain among the most disadvantaged areas of the country.Analysis by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT) found that when compared to the national average, many have lower life expectancies and higher rates of 16 to 19-year olds not in education or jobs. The report added there remained "significant and concentrated deprivation" in some parts of Fife, South Lanarkshire, East Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire and Clackmannanshire. But the report also found some ex-mining communities had turned a corner and were now prospering.Nicky Wilson, chair of the CRT trustees

Can covid get worse for developing world?
covid-19 has killed many more people in richer countries than the populous developing world. However, a new World Bank study suggests that this could change since lower-income countries have a greater number of elderly people, who are more at risk due to the ill-effects of the coronavirus.Researchers Philip Schellekens and Diego Sourrouille say that as of 23 May, rich countries had about 79% of the global covid-19 deaths despite having just 16% of the population.

Inmate at B.C. prison says response to massive COVID-19 outbreak was ‘not nice at all’
COVID-19 in Canada says staff at the facility wasted weeks when responding to the rapidly spreading health crisis, and even slowed progress further to quell rising fears. The inmate, whom Global News is not identifying so as to ensure his safety, is among the 120 inmates at Mission Institution in B.C.’s Fraser Valley who got infected with the novel coronavirus earlier this year. About a dozen staff members also tested positive before the outbreak was declared over on May 28, and one of the inmates later died of the disease. The outbreak forced the prison to go into lockdown in early April, which remains largely in place to prevent future cases within the facility.
