It is the fourth coronavirus jab approved for use in the UK. With only one dose of the jab necessary, the vaccine, developed by Johnson & Johnson’s pharmaceutical arm Janssen, will "play an important role in the months to come", according to health secretary Matt Hancock.

Prime minister Boris Johnson said the news was "very welcome" and "another boost to our hugely successful vaccination programme".

The government has secured 20 million doses of the single-shot jab, the first of which are expected to arrive in the UK from later this year.
