PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw is responding to the sharp increase in carjackings in the city since 2020 as the department is sharing tips and warning signs to help keep residents safe. Outlaw shared a message on the department's social media pages Wednesday night saying there was no single issue more important to her and the department than "fighting the surge of violent crime that continues to plague our city."She goes on to call the 'onslaught' of violence 'unacceptable' and says the department remains committed to slowing those trends. "One of the more disturbing trends that we have seen in Philadelphia is the startling increase in the number of carjackings – the taking of a vehicle by force or fear - that have been experienced over the past two years," Outlaw wrote. Philadelphia police say 757 carjackings were reported in the city in 2021 - and the staggering spike has continued into 2022. The department is now sharing safety tips, details on hotspots, and information on what victims should do.According to the post, there were 757 reported carjackings in Philadelphia in 2021 – an increase of 34% over 2020. So far in 2022, police data obtained by FOX 29 says there have already been at least 90 reported carjackings.

COLOMBO (News 1st): Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province Deshabandu Thennakoon told a Sri Lankan Court that if all responsible agencies held joint discussions on the intelligence received and acted expeditiously, the 2019 Easter Attacks could have been prevented.The Senior Cop was testifying at the Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar in the case filed against Former Police Chief Pujith Jayasundara.Ex-IGP Jayasundara is charged with neglecting his duties by failing to prevent the Easter Attacks among other charges.Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Pieris led the evidence from the prosecution on Tuesday (18).Deshabandu Thennakoon told the court that the intel received by the Head of National Intelligence on the 9th of April 2019 from the State Intelligence Serves became yet another piece of intel that flowed from top to bottom of the chain of command.The witness told the court that even though the intel was on extremists targeting religious places and the Indian High Commission, there were no images or photographs of the wanted suspects, and therefore there was no opportunity for him or his junior officers to identify the perpetrators.However, the court questioned the witness if Sri Lanka Police is only capable of preventing an event if the definite time and date is mentioned or does Sri Lanka Police not possess the capability of preventing a possible event by looking into those claims.The Senior Police Officer responded that there was no definite information available on the matter.He also told the court that he was on leave from the 18th to the 21st of April 2019, and therefore he did not have time to follow up on the instructions given to junior officers.He added that there was no follow-up from Ex-IGP

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department on Monday shared surveillance video of a car that is believed to have been used in the deadly shooting of a pregnant woman who was gunned down after she returned home from her baby shower last November in Crescentville.According to investigators, 32-year-old Jessica Covington was outside her home on the 6100 block of Palmetto Street collecting baby shower gifts from her car when she was shot in the head and stomach.Covington, who was 7 months pregnant, was rushed to Einstein Medical Center where she and her unborn child died. Investigators found 10 spent shell casings in the aftermath of the shooting and said it "appears to have been targeted."Police sources and close friends tell FOX 29's Dave Kinchen that 32-year-old Jessica Covington was the pregnant woman shot and killed Saturday night in Crescentville.  "We will not rest until this obviously dangerous individual is in custody," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila has warned that if the fuel imported to the country is released to the Ceylon Electricity Board for electricity generation, there will be a shortage of fuel for vehicles.“We were compelled to reach a decision to only release fuel to the CEB if they deliver payment in USD,” the Minister told News 1st adding that Sri Lanka does not have oil deposits or large stocks of fuel to be given to the CEB.“We can only procure fuel for the CEB if they can provide us with payment in USD,” he said.The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation has already delivered 1,500 metric tons of diesel per day in the last two days.“At present, there are two tankers anchored at sea with a total of 76,000 MT of diesel. If the (CEB) can provide us with the US Dollars to unload one of them, we can deliver diesel to the Ceylon Electricity Board,” he told News 1st while denying that he will be held accountable for any power-cuts that may arise over the shortage of fuel to generate electricity.Minister Gammanpila said he is NOT vested with the responsibility of sourcing US Dollars for the country, adding that he has no power to even print US dollars.“The issue is not the fact that the CEB owes the CPC over Rs.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan authorities will meet on Tuesday (18) to discuss the procurement of fuel for an uninterruptible power supply to the island nation.The Ceylon Electricity Board told News 1st that the existing stocks of fuel will only be sufficient to generate electricity until Tuesday (18) morning.On Saturday (15) the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation supplied 3,000 MT of Diesel to the Ceylon Electricity Board for power generation, and the CPC said the fuel was released considering it as an urgent requirement.Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila said if the Ceylon Electricity Board needs fuel continuously, it must provide US dollars to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.The Minister said if the CEB provides the dollars, the Ministry of Energy is prepared to import and supply the required stocks of fuel for power generation.Minister Gammanpila noted that amidst the prevailing dollar crisis in the country, the CPC goes through serious difficulties to earn USD $400 million every month, to ensure the adequate supply of fuel stocks required for transportation and other industries.He said the Ministry of Energy informed the CEB three months ago that if they require fuel for power generation, they should inform in advance.However, according to the Energy Minister, the CEB has informed the CPC on the 11th of January that they require Diesel from the 13th of January.Minister Gammanpila said the CPC does not possess additional stocks of Diesel to supply on such short notice.He emphasized that the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation is ready to import and supply fuel if the Ceylon Electricity Board provides the necessary dollars, adding that the CEB can also directly import fuel by themselves.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka will hand over two Indian prisoners to Indian authorities under the SAARC exchange agreement.Prisons Commissioner and Spokesperson, Chandana Ekanayake told News 1st that the Additional Secretary (Legal) of the Ministry of Justice had informed the Commissioner-General of Prisons to hand over two Indian Prisoners to the Indian government, under the SAARC exchange agreement.One prisoner was found guilty of possession, distribution, and importation under the Poisons, Opium, and Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Act, No. 26 of 1986 by the Negombo High Court and was sentenced to three life sentences for each charge.He has been incarcerated for 12 years.The second prisoner was charged under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance and was also serving three life sentences for three charges.He has been incarcerated for 6 years.Accordingly, these two prisoners will be escorted to the Bandaranaike International Airport under armed guard by the Prison Officials and will be handed over to Indian Police Officers.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Five Sri Lankan fishermen have been rescued by merchant ship YM Summit 170 nautical miles east of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, after a Sri Lankan fishing vessel capsized off the coast of the Maldives.The Navy Spokesperson, Captain Indika de Silva said that there were six fishermen on board the vessel, however, one was missing.The Indian Coast Guard stated that the rescue was coordinated by Indian Coast Guard Maritime rescue coordination center (Mumbai) and Chennai.The rescued fishermen are due to be handed over to the Navy by the relevant merchant ship off the coast of Galle this afternoon (08).The fishing vessel, named Asela Putha has gone to sea from Beruwala.Subsequently, the owner of the vessel had complained to the Beruwala Police on 5th January that communication with the vessel had been disrupted.The Navy said it had informed the Maldivian and Mumbai naval authorities about the incident as well.
