When Manitoba seniors receive a special 200-dollar cheque from the provincial government later this month, they’ll also receive a letter from Premier Brian Pallister.
Pallister says he is including the note to thank seniors, and says it’s being done in a non-partisan way. But the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says the move could come across as partisan activity on the public dime.
Federation spokesman Todd Mackay says the cheques are the public’s money, not the premier’s. Pallister announced his plan last week to mail cheques to every senior, to help them deal with extra costs related to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as grocery deliveries.
