NORTH BERGEN, N.J. - An 18-year-old man from Maryland has been charged with attempted murder and bias intimidation after New Jersey authorities allege that he beat and choked a man he suspected of being gay earlier this month.

Jose Tobias Carranza Serrano, also known as Kevin Lopez, was arrested on June 23 and has been charged with attempted homicide, bias intimidation, robbery, and aggravated assault.

Authorities say during the early morning hours of June 22, Carranza Serrano attacked the victim near the south end of a lake in North Hudson Park in North Bergen.According to investigators, Carranza Serrano allegedly wanted to kill the victim, a stranger he had just met, because he suspected the victim was gay.

Pierson was an 18-year-old Marcus Hook resident who disappeared on April 14, 1981. Her remains were found in July 1981 and an autopsy determined the manner of death as homicide by blunt impact to the head.According to authorities, 58-year-old Wayne Anthony Walker has been charged with criminal homicide, kidnapping, conspiracy, first-degree murder, second-degree murder and third-degree murder.

Waukesha parade attack: Darrell Brooks pleads not guilty, more charges

WAUKESHA, Wis. - A Milwaukee man accused of killing six people and injuring dozens more when he drove an SUV through a suburban Christmas parade pleaded not guilty Friday to scores of criminal charges.Darrell Brooks Jr., 39, entered the pleas to 77 charges, including six counts of homicide and multiple counts of reckless endangerment, during a court appearance that lasted less than five minutes. Brooks' attorneys filed for a change of venue in the case on Thursday, but it's not clear when that motion will be considered.
