Scores of “Covid tourists” were blasted by police tonight for risking lives just to go for a pint in a Tier 2 city. A “shocking” number of fines from £200 were issued in York to revellers at the weekend travelling from neighbouring Tier 3 areas.
West and South Yorkshire are under much stricter restrictions. North Yorkshire Police found “large numbers” travelling from outside the patch, with the pattern repeated in other areas.
There were claims people were travelling from the south of England – where millions are living in Tier 4 – to Northumberland, which is in Tier 3.
The variant of the virus is already present in Cumbria – with the number of new cases rocketing, bringing added pressure to local hospitals.
