Boris Johnson fails on coronavirus test results in 24 hours target

Boris Johnson has missed his target to get all coronavirus tests delivering results in 24 hours by the end of June. NHS Test and Trace data shows that in the final week of the month only around a quarter of tests carried out at hospitals and care homes were turned around this quickly.

When it came to tests at regional drive through and mobile testing sites nine out of ten tests saw results delivered on time.

The 24 hour target is key to allowing tracers to get hold of contacts before they start spreading the virus to others. The Prime Minister had made the pledge, qualifying that by excluding “insuperable problems” with home testing kits.
