FCC to vote in July to make '988' the suicide hotline number
RELATED: CoronavirusNOW.com, FOX launches national hub for COVID-19 news and updatesThat 800 number will remain in place, but having the shorter number makes it easier for people to call, and is expected to lead to an increase in calls to the hotline.Suicide-prevention experts have said that the three-digit number will be a breakthrough that helps people in crisis. One aspect of designating a three-digit number for the hotline, just like 911 for emergencies, is that it removes stigma for seeking help in a mental-health emergency, they say.AdvertisementThe government’s action comes as suicide rates have increased across the U.S.

COVID-19: Achieving herd immunity may occur sooner than previously thought
Stay informed with live updates on the current COVID-19 outbreak and visit our coronavirus hub for more advice on prevention and treatment. The classical model that epidemiologists use to predict herd immunity estimate that the threshold for COVID-19 is around 60% of the population. But the model assumes that a population gains immunity due to a vaccination program, rather than as a result of infection during an outbreak. Mathematicians at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom and Stockholm University in Sweden realized that different groups of people within a population spread infections at different rates.
