Covid situation 'fragile' ahead of Omicron surge - NPHET

In its letter to Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, the National Public Health Emergency Team said the Covid-19 situation continues to be very fragile given the very high number of cases being confirmed.

The Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, said that Covid-19 mortality stands at around six deaths per day, or 180 deaths per month. "This may rise further, given the high case counts and risk from Omicron, though booster vaccination may mitigate against this.

There continues to be a significant number of outbreaks reported in settings with vulnerable populations," he said. As of 16 December, 39 cases of the Omicron variant have been confirmed in Ireland and the data indicates that the prevalence of Omicron has risen rapidly here over
