A 93-year-old widow who was preparing to return home after beating a bout of pneumonia died after she contracted coronavirus.

Bridget Richards was recovering in Sedgemoor Nursing Hub, Norris Green, when she was taken to Aintree hospital after showing symptoms of the killer virus.

Her condition deteriorated and she tested positive for the killer bug and died on Saturday, reports the Liverpool Echo. Bridget, from Wavertree, Merseyside, had been widowed decades ago and never had children.

Her heartbroken niece, 76-year-old Sakina Ali, was unable able to visit her before she died. So Bridget told a hospital worker to deliver a final message to her niece: "Tell Sakina.
