Gorton MP Afzal Khan on the pain of losing a generation of his family to Covid-19 and why we need a public inquiry urgently

When Afzal Khan’s mother died in March 2020, he was not prepared. The Gorton MP had just finished isolating for Covid-19 when Akhtar Nissa Begum was taken into the care of medics at North Manchester Hospital.

The country had just gone into lockdown for the first time and there were far more questions than answers as to how the virus would be controlled.

But one thing was certain - there would be no visitors to hospitals. So when Afzal got a call from his mother’s doctor he admits he did not quite comprehend the gravity of her illness. “I remember he said ‘it will be a difficult few hours and if she makes it through it will be hard and if not, I’m sorry’. “I didn’t realise he was telling me that was it,” he says.
