They've written songs about each other, toured side by side, and grown into legendary OAPs together. Bob Dylan and Neil Young’s bromance has spanned more than five decades – with Young even referring to himself as a ‘B student’ of his Mr Tambourine Man pal.

But on Friday the musical masters appeared to go head to head for the first time – releasing their own highly anticipated albums on the same day.

Yet rock critic Robert Christgau – who has met US superstar Bob, 79, and Canadian Neil, 74, many times – reckons that, far from being rivals, the two icons planned it that way. “They’ve paid compliments to each other over the years,” he said. “Neil is a great admirer of Dylan.
