Covid hospitalisations and deaths are falling as a combination of lockdown and the vaccine rollout drives down infections. But many wards are still rammed with patients suffering the crippling effects of the virus.
Recent figures show that 24,352 people were still in hospital with coronavirus a week ago. On Monday the UK recorded the lowest daily death toll, 230, of the year and the lowest number of new infections, 9,765, since October.
But while the figures portray a positive story, the day-to-day life of one hospital reveals the exhausting battles NHS staff are still fighting and the individual human stories of patients and their families.
