COLOMBO (News 1st); One in three households, 33% of Sri Lankans are food insecure according to WFP’s Household Food Security Survey (December 2022).It added that nearly seven in ten households are adopting foodbased coping strategies such as relying on less preferred food, limiting portion sizes and reducing the number of meals. In addition, over eight in ten households are turning to livelihood coping strategies such as borrowing money or spending savings.WFP’s Market Functionality Index for December showed that commodity prices continue to be volatile. Several markets have also reported scarcity of items including cereals.According to the Colombo Consumer Price Index, headline inflation (year-on-year) for January 2023 was 54.2 percent, down from the 57.2 percent in December 2022.

'Swarm of Meteors' illuminate Kansas sky

Tunkhannock Township, Pa. - A silicone doll, a plastic bag and a suspicious location led to an interesting investigation in a Pennsylvania town. According to the Tunkhannock Township Police Department, officers were dispatched to the creek along State Route 307 in Overfield Township on Monday for a possible report of human remains. Authorities say a man and his child were getting a ball from the creek when they saw a plastic bag with what looked like a human foot sticking out of it. Officers and the county coroner came to the scene to observe the bag but did not touch or move it, per police. Officials say the foot was "extremely lifelike," and Pennsylvania State Police was called in to offer assistance. Sri Lanka records highest worker remittances in August ’22

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Workers’ remittances increased to US dollars 325 million during August 2022, in comparison to US dollars 279 million in the previous month, recording the highest monthly remittances thus far during 2022. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka said that total departures for foreign employment were recorded at 29,072 during August 2022. Total departures of foreign employment comprised unskilled (9,685), skilled (8,590), and domestic aid (7,176) categories. Total departures for foreign employment during January – August 2022 were recorded at 192,594, compared to 45,899 in the corresponding period of the previous year, and a total of 117,952 in 2021.Tourist arrivals:Tourist arrivals moderated in August 2022 to 37,760, from 47,293 arrivals recorded in July 2022. The United Kingdom, India, Germany, and France remained the main source countries for tourist arrivals in August 2022.

The fast-food chain announced Tuesday a collaboration with Cactus Plant Flea Market to create a boxed meal that contains one of four collectible figurines: Grimace, the Hamburglar, and Birdie and Cactus Buddy. Meal options include a Big Mac, or the 10-piece Chicken McNuggets with french fries and a drink. The announcement had adults running (or maybe more like driving) to their local McDonald’s to snag a box. The adult meals are only available for a limited time, which is probably why McDonald’s employees are feeling the sting of handling an avalanche of orders for the specialized meals. People on social media claiming to be McDonald’s workers are venting their frustrations on Reddit and TikTok as orders pile up for the coveted adult Happy Meals and staff struggle to meet demand. One user on Reddit posted under the title: "New Adult Happy-meals are killing me" and said workers need to "literally stockpile them (happy meals) to survive a rush."
