Hospitals have reported a significant reduction in the number of vacant general beds available, as more non-Covid-19 cases are admitted.
Overnight there were just 489 vacant general beds free around the country, down 262 beds on the situation on Monday. Over 2,000 general beds were freed up in the public hospital system in mid-March, after a freeze on non-essential care was introduced, around the start of the pandemic.
Now hospitals are increasingly dealing with non-Covid-19 admissions and some are heading towards pre-Covid-19 occupancy levels.
Three hospitals - Limerick, Kilkenny and the Children's Hospital Tallaght, are now listed by the Health Service Executive as having no vacant general beds for patients.
