Oscars Extend Eligibility to Streamed Films Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

"The historically tragic COVID-19 pandemic necessitates this temporary exception to our awards eligibility rules," Academy says.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced Tuesday (April 28) that it will allow streamed films to compete for the 93rd annual Academy Awards.

The board also announced rule changes in the music, sound and international feature film categories. And, in a sign of the times, the Academy announced that this will be the final year that DVD screeners, music CDs, screenplays and hard-copy mailings will be permitted.
