The rise in new coronavirus cases in England’s community “appears to have stabilised”, official figures said today. The Office for National Statistics said there were an estimated 45,700 new cases per day (37,700 to 59,600) in the week to October 31.

That is very slightly down from an estimated 51,900 new cases per day (95% credible interval: 38,500 to 79,200) in the week to October 23.

ONS officials said “the infection rate has increased in recent weeks, but the rate of increase is less steep compared with previous weeks”.

They said positive test results were still increasing in most age groups, but appeared to be “levelling off” among older teenagers and young adults. “Incidence appears to have stabilised at around 50,000 new infections
