Council bosses are still paying school taxis and buses in South Ayrshire to stop them from going bust during the pandemic. South Ayrshire Council will fork out about £667,000 to transport operators in April, May and June - which is 75 per cent of the firm's contract value.
There is a fear the companies could go out of business with no journeys running to primaries and secondaries. That would leave the council with no transport for children when schools reopen - potentially leading to problems finding new suppliers.
A South Ayrshire Council spokesman said: “When children and young people return to school, we want the transition to be as smooth as possible.
