‘People tend to underestimate covid-19’s explosive potential’
Halfway into a national lockdown, India now has nearly 4,000 reported cases of covid-19, the global pandemic that has infected over a million people across the world. Despite stringent efforts, cases have surged in the past two weeks, posing a major challenge for authorities. While India continues to struggle with the health crisis, Dr Jayaprakash Muliyil, a noted epidemiologist and chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Institute of Epidemiology, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and former principal of Christian Medical College, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, talked about the effectiveness of the lockdown in containing the virus, potential community transmission and effective measures to deal with the contagion.
