Winter Covid lockdown 'hard to rule out' amid concern over rising Omicron cases

A winter lockdown cannot be ruled out amid fears over the Omicron variant, a leading Covid expert has said. Professor Neil Ferguson, who is considered to be one of the architects of the first UK-wide shutdown in March 2020, said that the early findings from Omicron are concerning.

But he admitted that there is no evidence so far to indicate how much the new strain of the virus will impact the severity of infection.Professor Ferguson has said that it is likely that Omicron case numbers could peak in January if no further UK-wide measures are taken to help slow the spread of infection.

The UK Government confirmed that there has been a total of 437 Omicron case identified in the UK so far. Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he said:
