Philadelphia Police Department revamping Cold Case Unit as violence climbs

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department is reforming its cold case investigation branch that was forced into dormancy as homicides surged across the city and stretched resources thin. "It was very unfortunate, but the cold cases ended up going by the wayside," Captain Jason Smith from the department's homicide unit told FOX 29's Kelly Rule. There are currently more than 4,000 unsolved murders in Philadelphia dating back to 1990, and just last year the city set a historically bloody benchmark of 562 killings. Smith said as homicides continued to pour in, he was forced to begin assigning investigators from the Cold Case Unit to probe active homicides. MORE LOCAL HEADLINES"We will continue to work those investigations, but in order to do that effectively I need a team of investigators dedicated to that purpose; to work on cold case investigations," Smith said. The department's revamped Cold Case Unit currently consists of two teams and four investigators, but Smith expects to double the unit's manpower by mid-September. Together, the team will work off tips and pull old case files to meticulously go through the details of the thousands of unsolved murders.

Raheem, Nathaniel and Dayon Pinder PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. - Chester County officials announce an arrest in a nearly two-year-old Phoenixville murder case.According to the Chester County District Attorney’s Office and Phoenixville Police, three members of one family are in custody and charged with the death of 73-year-old Ira Solomon.Authorities say 46-year-old Raheem Pinder, of Pottstown, 44-year-old Dayon Pinder, of West Chester and 49-year-old Philadelphia resident Nathaniel Pinder – two brothers and a cousin – were arrested and charged with murder, robbery, conspiracy and related charges.According to officials, Phoenixville police and paramedics were called on December 29, 2020, about 1 p.m., to the 400 block of Dayton Street, on the report of a person dead.Responding officers found 73-year-old Solomon on the kitchen floor, with a gunshot wound to the head. He was declared dead at the scene.Police and Chester County officials credit witnesses and other acquaintances, along with home video recordings on Dayton Street, and with surveillance from an Uwchlan Township hotel, where one of the defendants was a long-term guest, with the eventual arrest of the three men.Raheem Pinder was arrested on August 24th and is being held without bail at Chester County Prison.

PHILADELPHIA - The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the fatal shooting of a Philadelphia man in Atlantic City. According to authorities, the shooting happened on Thursday around 12:06 a.m. Officials say officers from the Atlantic City Police Department responded to a Shot Spotter Alert near the 1300 block of Baltic Avenue. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESOfficers found 31-year-old Jordan Eaddy and he was pronounced dead on scene, according to the Prosecutor's Office. Authorities did not detail the extent of his injuries. "So far, several parents have come forward to let us know that they also had their children taken away from them as a result of Robin Niceta’s actions related to their cases whether by what they believe to be false testimony during court or what they believe to be false reports," Elliot Singer, the lawyer who prepared the lawsuit, said earlier this week, according to The Gazette. Robin Niceta is accused of making sexual advances towards women she was actively investigating in her role as a social worker for the Arapahoe County Department of Human Services, and trying to separate children from those women's families if her advances were spurned, according to the lawsuit.
