AEG Offering Ticketholders 30-Day Refund Period for Rescheduled Shows

AEG Presents, the live music conglomerate that puts on concerts across the United States in additional to notable festivals including Coachella, has announced it will open a 30-day window for ticketholders to get refunds for shows that have been rescheduled due to COVID-19, The New York Times reports. The window begins May 1 and will be available only for ticketholders whose shows have been postponed and rescheduled; shows that have yet to be rescheduled are ineligible for refunds at this time.

Songwriter Rights Organizations Launch Coronavirus Relief Fund

The Performing Rights Organizations—American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), and SESAC—have teamed up to form a new coronavirus relief fund as part of the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund. The fund will focus on helping songwriters, composers, and lyricists. Apple Music Starts $50 Million Coronavirus Relief Fund for Indie Labels

Apple Music has launched a $50 million advance royalty fund to ensure that artists will get paid and label operations can continue during the coronavirus pandemic, Rolling Stone reports. The streaming giant confirmed the news in a letter to labels (obtained by Rolling Stone). Eligible labels must have a direct Apple Music distribution deal and earn $10,000 minimum on a quarterly basis.

CMJ Is Now Under New Ownership

Late last year, it was announced that New York City’s CMJ Music Marathon would return for the first time in five years. The week-long multi-venue festival was initially launched in 1978, and ran through 2015. However following a change in ownership and a string of legal issues, the event’s future was uncertain. Now, the British platform Amazing Radio has announced the acquisition of the CMJ brand.

Paradigm Talent Agency Lays off Hundreds of Staffers in Music and Other Divisions

On Friday, March 20, Paradigm Talent Agency announced to its staff that it would be conducting mass “temporary” layoffs as the live music industry stares down a year of uncertainty due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. A source close to the situation tells Pitchfork that the layoff terms do not include severance. In addition, according to the source, laid-off employees receive just one month of health care and benefits. An internal memo written by Paradigm CEO Sam Gores and sent to employees on March 20—also viewed by Pitchfork—confirms that health care for Paradigm staffers who were laid off will end at the end of April.

Musicians Earned $4.3 Million From Bandcamp on Friday

On March 20, Bandcamp waived its revenue shares for a full 24 hours in an effort to help artists whose livelihoods have been impacted by coronavirus. Several companies followed suit, directing all revenue directly to artists on Friday. It ended up being the biggest sales day in Bandcamp’s history—$4.3 million was spent on music that day, the company announced. The money came from the purchase of roughly 800,000 items. “That’s more than 15 times our normal Friday, and at the peak, fans were buying 11 items per second,” Bandcamp wrote.
