Patients living with Parkinson's find a new way to fight at Bucks County boxing gym

NEW HOPE, Pa. - A Bucks County boxing gym is working with patients living with Parkinson’s Disease to help give them a fighter’s chance at living a healthy, normal life. Rock Steady Boxing, in New Hope, helps Michael McGuire get through the day. "It’s not like an exercise program where you go to lose weight or look good. It’s a program where you go to live, to live each day the best you can," McGuire said. McGuire was diagnosed with Parkinson’s back in February of last year."When I found out I was in a little bit of a depression. I didn’t know what I was going to do," he added. He found out that intense exercise, like boxing, helps slow the disease down. "It helps the brain use what dopamine is there more efficiently.

Caught on camera: Argument leads to broad daylight shootout in Southwest Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police are looking to identify and locate two men they say were engaged in a shootout on a Southwest Philadelphia street last month. The shooting occurred back on March 21 on the 2200 block of South 69th Street. Video of the incident shows two men engaged in a heated argument on the front porch of home. One of the suspects begins to back away while still shouting at the second suspect. The men then reconvene on the steps as both stand with their hands in their pocket before both pull out handguns. Both suspects open fire, retreating in opposite directions.

'Autism acceptance': Local author advocates for changes in the way Autism spectrum disorder is viewed

PHILADELPHIA - In 2021, the month of April went from being Autism Awareness Month to Autism Acceptance Month in an effort to make society more accepting of differences and one local woman is focused on doing just that. More women are being diagnosed with autism as adults, including Sarah Nannery, the Director of Development for Autism Programming at Drexel University. She was diagnosed at the age of 31 when she was already a college graduate, married and a mother. "I went all through childhood just sort of being on the sidelines. I had a wonderful childhood, but there were just some differences that I never could really get a handle on," she told FOX 29. After she and her husband realized she needed more help and support in executive functioning and being the person she wanted to be, she took the steps to get a diagnosis despite fear. Laura Gaffney, an autism specialist at Durand Inc., joins to discuss the importance of autism awareness.Nannery says she was scared of an autism diagnosis because of society's view of the condition and the possible changes it potentially could have brought to her life and marriage, but she says it helped her. "The diagnosis helped me to know more about myself and know more about what tools I could use to be a better me," she said.

House fire in Hellertown claims live of 2 young girls

HELLERTOWN, Pa. - Two young girls have died following a house fire in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Authorities say the fire broke out just before 1 a.m. Friday on the 600 block of Linden Street in Hellertown. The coroner’s office announced Friday afternoon that Brianna Baer, 15, and Abigail Kaufman, 10, both died as a result of the fire. No further injuries have been reported at this time and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. This is a developing story.

PHILADELPHIA - A Philadelphia cat is heading home from the vet on Friday after authorities say he was the victim of an intentional dog attack.Officials are calling the recovery of Buddy the cat ‘miraculous’ as he heads to a foster home with a veterinarian where he’ll get continued care.Last week, Buddy was on a front porch in Philadelphia’s Frankford neighborhood. Video of the incident showed two suspects, ages 17 and 12, walking by the porch with their dogs. When the suspects spotted the car, authorities say they dropped the dogs’ leashes, allowing their lunging dogs to attack a defenseless Buddy.

Philadelphia Police Department shows off new $250M Public Services Building

PHILADELPHIA - After decades headquartered in Chinatown, the Philadelphia Police Department has a brand-new home in an historic Spring Garden building. FOX 29’s Jennifer Joyce was taken on a tour of the new Philadelphia Public Services Building on Thursday.History has been reborn at 400 North Broad Street, the former home of the Philadelphia Inquirer, built in the 1920s. Several historic features remain intact, like the nod to the Inquirer in what’s referred to as the Historic Lobby. "The building was registered as a historic building back I 1996 and as we completed this renovation we had to maintain that historic integrity of the building," explained Andrew Brown of Talson Solutions. Brown, the project manager, says the three-year project cost $252 million to complete. When you enter the building you’re greeted by a sculpture made up of more than 1,400 real police badges, and an updated seal of the City of Philadelphia shining a light on inclusivity. The entire building is 470,000 square feet and a majority of that space is occupied.

Possible tornado under investigation in Bucks County

BEDMINSTER TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Officials with the National Weather Service will be heading out to Bucks County Friday morning to determine if a tornado impacted that area Thursday nights. Tornado warnings were issued for parts of Bucks as a line of showers and severe storms tore through the Delaware Valley late Thursday night.Friday morning, the National Weather Service took to social media to ask residents near Bedminster Township to report any damage associated with those storms. The National Weather Service says they will be surveying an area of damage near Bedminster on Friday.

Police investigating possible package theft ring in Maple Shade

MAPLE SHADE, N.J. - Authorities are searching for a person of interest in possible New Jersey package theft ring who police believe is impersonating as a delivery driver. The investigation started after a Burlington County woman said her purse and a flash drive filled with pictures of her late mother was stolen from her car Thursday night."Completely violated, not being able to get those irreplaceable items back it just weighs on you, it sucks," the woman who asked to remain anonymous said. The thieves allegedly used her stolen credit cards and her home address to order 2 iPhone 13's valued at $1300 each. Home security camera shows a person dressed in a FedEx uniform knock on the woman's door just after the packages were dropped off. The family knew something was wrong, and her son followed the suspected imposter FedEx driver to a van with stolen license plates. "My son questioned him are you really a Fed Ex employee or are you here just to steal these iPhones off my mom," she said.
