The Beatles’ original handwritten Hey Jude lyrics have been sold for $910,000 (£731,000) at auction. The sale with Julien’s Auctions went for nine times the original estimate on Friday 10 April.
Music specialist Jason Watkins said Paul McCartney’s notes were written as a guide to a 1968 studio recording of the song and was very rare. ‘It’s obviously a very iconic song that everyone’s familiar with,’ said Jason. ‘These handwritten lyrics were used in the studio as a guide when they were recording it.’ The auction was meant to take place both online and at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square, New York City, but the coronavirus pandemic meant it was online-only.
