House of Commons set to resume as trucker protest continues in Ottawa
protest against government-imposed COVID-19 measures enters its third full day. Many of the horn-honking demonstrators who brought Ottawa to a near standstill on the weekend showed no signs of budging as parliamentarians, businesses and school administrators were left wondering when the usual rhythm of the frazzled national capital would resume.Alexandra Maheux, a spokeswoman for government House leader Mark Holland, said the ongoing protest is not interfering with parliamentary business.“We have important work to accomplish for Canadians in Parliament, and we’re looking forward to getting this done and delivering results,” Maheux said late Sunday. ‘Several’ investigations underway after monuments defaced during Ottawa trucker rally: police She noted that MPs have the flexibility to work in a hybrid House in this sitting, which remains in effect until June, to help curb the spread of COVID-19.“Some MPs will be in the chamber on Monday and beyond, and others will participate virtually,” Maheux said.A memo circulated Sunday by Patrick McDonell, the House sergeant-at-arms, said security plans were being developed to ensure personal safety.Several criminal investigations are underway into actions – including the desecration of monuments – during the ongoing protest of vaccine mandates and COVID-19 restrictions, Ottawa police said Sunday.Residents of the capital were again told to avoid travelling to the city centre Sunday as trucks snarled numerous roads.

Some trucker convoy organizers have history of white nationalism, racism
the trucker convoy started appearing on Ottawa streets, some Twitter users shared a particular photo: a pickup truck with a confederate flag flying from the bed. Now, as the convoy descends on Ottawa with the stated aim of opposing all COVID-19 mandates, anti-hate experts allege those with white nationalist and Islamophobic views don’t just represent the fringes of the movement but are among the organizers of the convoy.“We’re saying that this is a far-right convoy because — from day one — the organizers themselves are part of the far-right movement,” said Evan Balgord, executive director of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network.“They have previously been involved in far-right movements and have made Islamophobic comments in the past.” Trucker convoy protest arrives in Ottawa for multi-day demonstration It can be difficult to determine who is a key organizer of the convoy, but there are some names that emerge time and time again — whether as authors of the $7.4million GoFundMe campaign, as points of contact on the website that boasts a petition with 240,000 signatures, or on social media posts providing widely-shared directions to anyone hoping to join.Global News contacted all the organizers mentioned in this story, but none responded by the time of publication. Jason LaFace, an Ontario organizer, did pick up the call, but upon the reporter identifying themselves, immediately laughed, said “no thank you,” and hung up the phone. The convoy initially kicked off with a focus on opposing vaccine mandates — especially the one aimed at truckers.

‘Fringe minority’ in truck convoy with ‘unacceptable views’ don’t represent Canadians: Trudeau
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the “fringe minority” heading to Ottawa in a truck convoy that hold “unacceptable views” don’t represent the way most Canadians feel.He made the comments in a press conference Wednesday evening, on the heels of Global News reports that far-right and white nationalist groups see the convoy as an opportunity. Far-right groups hope trucker protest will be Canada’s ‘January 6th’  Organizers of the truck convoy have been adamant that these extremist voices do not represent the position of the protestors.“The small fringe minority of people who are on their way to Ottawa, who are holding unacceptable views that they are expressing, do not represent the views of Canadians,” Trudeau said.“(Canadians) who have been there for each other, who know that following the science and stepping up to protect each other is the best way to continue to ensure our freedoms, our rights, our values as a country.”He added that “close to 90 per cent” of truckers in Canada “are vaccinated.”Tamara Lich, an organizer of the truck convoy, said in a video posted to the convoy’s Facebook page that the most extreme voices in the movement do not reflect the position of the protesters.“As you know, we are on our way to Ottawa to hold a peaceful protest.

Expect traffic delays as convoy protest reaches London on Thursday: OPP
convoy of truckers and supporters en route to Ottawa to protest COVID-19 vaccine mandates is scheduled to launch its southwestern Ontario route on Thursday morning. Trucker convoy organizer calls for ‘peaceful protest’ without ‘violence’ or ‘threats’ Convoys travelling from Sarnia and Windsor are set to meet at the Flying J Travel Center on Highbury Avenue South at around 11 a.m.Organizers say the so-called “freedom convoy” will stick around for at least an hour before heading eastbound on Highway 401 toward Drumbo and eventually stopping in Kingston for the day. While the convoy was originally set to meet in London at 8 a.m., organizers announced an updated time of arrival on Wednesday afternoon. There’s no word on how large the crowd will be in London, but provincial police will be on hand to monitor the protest.“What we want is for the demonstrators to be safe, we want people who may gather to watch the convoy go through to be safe and we want those who are on the road with the demonstrators as motorists to be safe as well,” said Derek Rogers, the regional media relations coordinator for West Region OPP.“We will have a significant number of officers in the area to maintain an orderly flow and to ensure that everybody remains safe.” As trucker convoy rolls to Ottawa, grocery stores say supply issues have ‘started to ease’ Rogers says drivers should expect delays on Highway 401 when the convoy arrives, as well as on any roads that converge on the 401.On top of the potential for heavy traffic, drivers should also be mindful of the weather.
