Researchers at the University of Calgary have developed a new method to test for the presence of the COVID-19 virus. Officials said the new method is still undergoing further research, but has proven to provide results within 30 minutes without the need for high-tech equipment. “We are in the early stages of unlocking the potential of this method,” clinical assistant professor at the U of C, Dr.
Byron Berenger said. “As we’ve seen in Alberta, detecting and tracking positive cases of COVID-19 has proven critical in containing the spread of the virus.” The new testing research is supported by grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Genome Canada and the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services Clinical Research Fund.
