The number of lives lost to Covid-19 in UK hospitals has risen by 165 as scientists warn Christmas bubbles could cause "disaster".

The latest fatalities include 159 in England, two in Scotland and four in Northern Ireland. NHS Wales is not releasing figures today due to a "planned maintenance" of its information management system, a statement on its website said.

Patients who died in England were aged between 47 and 97, with all but five having known underlying health conditions. Later today the Department of Health will release a daily update confirming the number of deaths in all settings.

Last night the official death toll stood at 64,026. NHS England has provided a regional breakdown showing where the latest deaths were recorded.
