The number of coronavirus deaths in English hospitals has risen by 420 on New Year's Day - with one patient just eight years old.
Today's grim toll brings the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 50,668. Patients were aged between eight and 100 years old.
All except 12 (aged 55 to 90 years old) had known underlying health conditions. The date of their deaths ranges from 24 November to 31 December 2020 and their families have been informed.
246 out of the 420 patients were in London, the South East and the East - current Covid hotspots. The news comes after the UK reported a record high of more than 55,000 cases in one day as struggling hospitals in the south increasingly warn of being overstretched.
