It is not yet known if two historic monuments in Tameside were damaged beyond repair in an early morning crash council bosses say.
The Trough has stood at the junction of Manchester Road and Audneshaw Road in the Fairfield area of Audnehsaw since 1879. However, the granite horse and cattle drinking trough was smashed into several pieces after a car mounted the pavement and collided with it.
A cast iron electricity transformer which sits behind it containing the Manchester coat of arms and which used to contain three lamps to direct trams during the days of the Manchester Corporation was also flattened and badly damaged.
