Almost 3,000 Americans died with coronavirus in 24 hours at the end of last week – meaning the country registered its deadliest day just as lockdown measures were starting to be eased in many states.
According to the figures, the US recorded 2,909 deaths in a single day as of 4am on Friday, May 1, the Daily Mail reported. That's nearly 500 more deaths than the previous deadliest day of April 23 when 2,471 deaths were confirmed.
And as of Sunday, there had been 67,983 deaths caused by coronavirus in America. Italy has been the second worst-hit country, recording 28,884 deaths.
There are currently a total of 1,169,984 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the US. By that measure, the second worst-hit country on Earth is Spain, where 247,122 people
