What we know about 18 new cases of the Indian variant

A further 18 cases of the so-called Indian variant have been detected in Ireland, bringing the total cases to date in the country to 59.

The updated figure, up from 41 last Friday, was published yesterday to the GISAID database following the submission of information by Ireland's National Virus Reference Laboratory.

GISAID receives data from laboratories across the world, as part of a collaborative global effort to track variants of the SARS‑CoV‑2 virus – which causes Covid-19 – in as close to real-time as possible.
