Local authorities across the UK are set to be able to start their own mass testing regimes as part of a Government plan to roll out quick turnaround Covid-19 tests.
The Health Secretary said he has written to 67 directors of public health about providing “10% of their population per week” with tests.
It comes after Liverpool began rolling out its trial program, the city is the first part of the country to trial mass testing for all - including those who do not have COVID-19 symptoms.
The increased speed and availability are a result of the introduction of Lateral flow tests, which use similar technology to a pregnancy test and have a turnaround time of under an hour.
