The Courts Service says that almost 800 remote court hearings have been held during the current health crisis. Since 18 April, there have also been up to 7,000 video conference calls to prisoners during court sessions.
Launching its annual report for 2019, the Courts Service said there would be more legislative initiatives to further respond to the Covid-19 crisis and modernise the courts system.
These will include expanding the use of video conferencing and filing cases electronically. There were 670,000 matters dealt with by the courts last year - 445,000 criminal and 233,000 civil.
The annual report states that there were 20,500 domestic violence applications in 2019, an increase of 10% on the previous year.
