Separate coronavirus outbreaks were detected at 92 care homes in the UK in just the last 24 hours. Roughly 13.5% of all care homes in the UK (11,300) are confirmed to have at least one case of Covid-19, Chief Medical Officer Chris Witty said at this afternoon's Downing Street press conference on the pandemic.
He added that staff were doing a "very difficult job" for residents. Last week the figure was at 9%. It is feared that that percentage will increase significantly in the coming days.
Almost 100 residents are already known to have died from coronavirus, but the true statistic is unknown because daily figures released by Public Health England relate only to NHS hospital fatalities.
