Coronavirus cases have now hit 400,000, representing a doubling in the past week. To date, more than 415,000 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, with 18,559 deaths.
There has been a major surge of new cases in the US, which have surged tenfold in the past week to more than 50,000. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says 85% of cases in the past day have been recorded in Europe or the US.
It comes as WHO officials have warned the pandemic is accelerating. The 100,000 cases milestone was reached on March 6, more than two months after the disease was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
